<datacite:description descriptionType="Abstract">This study examines the structural effect of husbands’ and wives’ personal networks upon their marital ties in terms of the socio-cultural context of modern Japan, using quantitative and qualitative data from married couples in a suburb city of metropolitan Tokyo and a more traditional regionalcenter city. Couples with larger local kin networks tend to be emotionally interdependent in the context of the traditional Japanese patrilineal family system. Suburban Tokyo couples seem to be increasingly ‘liberated’ from the binding effect of traditional local kin as their kinship networks are more spatially dispersed, and their gender role segregation tends to be structurally enhanced by the wives’ commitment to neighbor networks and their husbands’ commitment to co-worker networks. This study suggests that patterns of family-community interface are dependent on the sociocultural context in each society, but it echoes previous studies of Western and non-Western societies in that the overlap of husbands’ and wives’ networks seems to structurally promote spousal emotional interdependence regardless of cultural context.</datacite:description>
