Among students from\ndiverse backgrounds, a significant number will be linguistic minority students categorized\nas remedial in need of further academic literacy education in the mainstream language of\nthe university. This is the case for a majority of immigrant students in the United States\nfor whom English is a second or third language. All too often, these remedial English\nlearner students are themselves blamed for their lack of academic preparation even though\neducational policies and practices in the elementary and secondary schools have often\nignored their educational and linguistics rights and needs. Also, the English language\ninstructors in the university are frequently asked to offset their academic deficit in a short\ntime without adequate allocation of resources.\n     To date, however, there is a paucity of research conducted on these students,\nwhich can inform us about their gaps in knowledge and skills and about factors in their\npersonal and educational backgrounds, which may influence their learning. Thus, the\ngoal of this paper is to report on the findings of a study that investigated the academic\nliteracy development of twenty linguistic minority students enrolled in developmental\nEnglish courses at an ethnically diverse urban university in the United States. Central to\nthe paper is the testimonials of the students about their educational experiences and the\nexamination of a disturbing hypothesis, derived from observation of these students, that\nthere exists a critical period for the acquisition of second language academic literacy\namong young adult language learners and that the rate and extent of this acquisition is\nlinked to whether or not they were given an opportunity to enhance their first language\n(L1) literacy.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_2_description_40":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_description":"Article","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_2_description_5":{"attribute_name":"内容記述","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_description":"【研究ノート/Research Note】","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_2_publisher_33":{"attribute_name":"出版者","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_publisher":"明治学院大学国際学部"}]},"item_2_source_id_10":{"attribute_name":"書誌レコードID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AA12017709","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_2_source_id_8":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"0918-984X","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_2_version_type_16":{"attribute_name":"著者版フラグ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_version_resource":"http://purl.org/coar/version/c_970fb48d4fbd8a85","subitem_version_type":"VoR"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"TANAKA, Keiko"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"2212","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"田中, 桂子"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"2213","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2018-03-06"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"kokusai_39_87-106.pdf","filesize":[{"value":"260.8 kB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"kokusai_39_87-106.pdf","url":"https://meigaku.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/1225/files/kokusai_39_87-106.pdf"},"version_id":"595afb1f-6aca-46e7-8364-1827c8af04d6"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"eng"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"The Education of Linguistic Minority Students in the United States: A Case Study of Asian Immigrants","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"The Education of Linguistic Minority Students in the United States: A Case Study of Asian Immigrants"}]},"item_type_id":"2","owner":"3","path":["175"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2013-09-20"},"publish_date":"2013-09-20","publish_status":"0","recid":"1225","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["The Education of Linguistic Minority Students in the United States: A Case Study of Asian Immigrants"],"weko_creator_id":"3","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-05-16T18:42:16.652453+00:00"}
