The study used the students' TOEFL ITP scores, grades, survey data, interview records, learning portfolio, and classroom observation notes and attempted to discern the problems students encountered, how successful the students were in overcoming them, and what factors appear to have been involved in influencing the learning outcomes. The paper also demonstrates the existence of variation between students in how they developed as learners and suggests that this variation is related to the students' educational and personal backgrounds. Furthermore, it shows that contextual variables which include curriculum and instruction, interaction between students enrolled in the program, and the culture and ethos of the community co-constructed by those involved in the program affect the students in significant ways and impact their learning.
