He lived in Midtown Manhattan at 159 West\n42nd Street. At that time, the city had a population just under\n700,000 and the surrounding land was still sparsely inhabited.\nHe was a medical doctor and treated many poor patients, for the\nentire city suffered from cholera. The young man devoted himself\nto medical treatment and church activities. His church was the\nForty Second Street Presbyterian Church. Its address was 139\nWest 42nd Street, just a few minutes’ walk from his residence.\nAlthough his business was a great success, his private life was\nunfortunate; he lost three children who were all born in New York.\nHe wanted to leave such a tragic town; meanwhile, the Board of\nForeign Missions gave him the opportunity to travel to Japan as a\nmedical missionary. His transfer from New York to Japan was not\n研究ノート\n276\nwithout risks. One big problem was that the couple had to leave\ntheir son Samuel alone in New York. Also, Japan still enforced the\nseclusion policy and the Japanese had strong negative feelings\ntowards foreigners.\nWhy did he dare to go to Japan under such difficult conditions?\nA man of good faith, he believed that God led him to go and help\npeople there.
