However, their study only assessed the abstraction degree of the imagination. We manipulated objective temporal distance and the degree of abstraction, and examined whether temporal distance increases positive perceptions about the future self, mediated by abstract interpretations. Participants were requested to imagine their near or distant future, and the abstraction of the imagination was manipulated. The results indicated that as the temporal distance increased, positive perceptions of one’s future also increased. However, concrete imagination and perception of positivity were correlated, which was inconsistent with our prediction.
