If participants choose an answer choice with negation against questions with negations, they are forced to face double negative questions. Conversely, there seems to be some merits to use negations for variability of sentence expression, verification of consistency of participant’s responses, and suppression of social-desirability bias. Yet, few studies have explored how much single and double negations are used in questionnaires. To address this, this study investigated commonly used Japanese questionnaires on the use of single or double negations at the end of their questions and answer choices. Results revealed about 60% of questionnaires included at least one negation in their question sentences and the average rate of single negations in one scale is 10.5% (SD=12.9%). Some questionnaires contained more than 50% of questions with negations in one scale, and some with double negations. 75% of questionnaires had answer choices with negations.
