The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of spike motion in world top level volleyball players. Front- and back-spike motions were recorded by high-speed video camera system operating at 250Hz to obtain three dimensional coordinates of the body segments and the center of the ball. The velocity of the ball, wrist, shoulder and trunk twist angle was calculated using motion analyzer. There is no significant relationship between the initial ball velocity and the velocity of wrist at the ball impact in world top level players. It is reasonable to suppose that significant positive correlation could be obtained in more heterogeneous group. Simultaneously, this fact indicates that reduced mass of impact part is various among the subjects. There was significant positive relationship between the velocity of wrist and horizontal velocity of mass center of body. It is likely that initial ball velocity should be affected by the velocity of wrist, and in turn, this velocity is restricted by horizontal velocity of mass center of body. We suggest that broad jump technique in take off is effective to increase the initial ball velocity. From the viewpoint of elastic energy, appropriate trunk backward and forward twisting which cause stretch-shortening cycle of agonist and synergist could contribute to increase the velocity of shoulder, wrist and ball. |
