This study explores the use of the English interjectional phrase fair enough based on the two-fold approaches,namely,questionnaire analysis on speaker's mental state in his/her utterance and corpus analysis of the usage with BNC and COCA. The result indicates that this phrase implies the negative attitude towards the hearer's previous utterance in most cases. It alsoclosely relates to politeness, speaker's age, social class and so on.Since these aspects are not treated in the current English-Japanese dictionaries,this study attempts to present an alternative sample description based on a wide range of findings. |
