| 内容記述 | In exploration of speech act sequence organization as an interactional strategy, this paper examines the similarities and differences between American English and Japanese speaker's normative use of directive speech acts in interaction. The analysis is primarily quantitative and is based on the analyses of the data obtained through a discourse completion test conducted in the United States and Japan, reported in Ikuta (2006) and Ikuta (2008) respectively. Focus is placed on an “interaction package/unit” which a speaker designs before launching into a new set of negotiation sequence in which he/she intends to pursue a directive speech act. It is demonstrated that, in such a negotiation sequence, speakers of both languages commonly use sequence of different speech acts to mitigate the anticipated FTA, while the types of those acts an their arrangement within a sequence may between the languages. | |||||||
